Our Half Bathroom Makeover
The small half bathroom on our first floor started out with dark wallpaper, blue trim, and a surprisingly tiny vanity mirror. (Maybe we just have big faces?) We stripped the walls and painted everything white to tide us over for a while, and when we were finally ready to fully redo the space, we used the roomâs small size as an excuse to splurge on a few beyond-basic fixtures and features that made all the difference.
A leggy new sink. We wanted a less boxy sink base to make this small room feel more spacious. (Did we mention that the former setup boasted an almond-colored seashell-shaped sink?) The old vanityâs cabinets had been empty since we moved in, so first we considered a pedestal sink. Then we saw a sink with ceramic legs in a catalog and, well, it was love. We learned that theyâre called âconsole sinks,â and although many that we hunted down were over a thousand dollars, we managed to buy this Nottingham sink for $350 from a discount site called Signature Hardware. Itâs 30 inches wide with ample counter space, and a basket of toilet paper can still live happily underneath it, along with a handy blue stool for Clara.
Mirror, mirror. We yearned for this sculptural mirror from Ballard Designs forever, but it was sold out (cue the dramatic music). When it came back into stock in a new size that was perfect for our bathroom (cue the angelic choir), we took it as a sign that it was meant to be and grabbed it during a 20-percent-off holiday sale. The rounded edges look great with our curvy sink, and itâs large enough for us to see our big faces without any of the whereâd-the-top-of-my-head-go issues that we previously had.
A new throne. The last few years have marked a new phase for us: toilet coveting. We didnât want anything with ambient music or mood lighting, but a clean-lined look thatâs more comfortable and has better flushing power certainly was compelling. To get over our sticker shock, we kept an eye out for sales and eventually scored this Kohler Memoirs model during a holiday promotion. It still cost a bit more than the basic models we used to buy, but we got it for less than half of its MSRP, and we love it more than two people should ever love a toilet.
